Antipathy to Stephen Schwartz? | |

Am I right that the Tony Awards, and somewhat more broadly the Broadway show reviewers and some insiders, have a disdain for Stephen Schwartz? I think he hasn't won a Tony for score, in spite of writing some of the most successful and technically adept American musical scores in history. I know that the critics were lukewarm at best about WICKED, and yet here it is, breaking both stage and film records. The score of WICKED is a tremendous achievement for drama-in-song as well as showbiz punch. And PIPPIN...and GODSPELL....? (And RAGS has a beautiful score too) Has he ever been given a lifetime achievement Tony? Surely he'd be up for that by now. Also, he is one of the last lyricists to respect proper rhyme, and trick and internal rhymes, writing today. (Although he did thankfully interrupt Glinda before she committed an appalling breach of grammar ("...For you and -") in the opening number of WICKED. (He needs to rhyme "lie" and intends "I", which of course is the wrong noun case, the subjective case, when it should be objective case, "me", governed by the preposition "for" ...to be rightfully if annoyingly pedantic.) |
