Would something like Illinoise qualify? Not a musical in its original form, but a story and characters were created out of a single album. Perhaps American Idiot, kinda?

No one knows yet, but Smash may qualify. You could argue that the carryover songs were written for Bombshell or the TV series Smash or both, but the stage version of Smash doesn't sound like it follows the plot of the TV series that closely, because most of the characters in the TV series have been jettisoned. I know the Bombshell musical didn't really exist, although there was a concert version of Bombshell, so there was at least some attempt to put the songs in some kind of order.

I kind of wish Adam Guettel had used his songs for The Princess Bride for some new musical, so we could hear them. I know there are examples where the writers of a musical lost or didn't get the rights to whatever it was they were adapting, so they had to change the show, but none of those examples are coming to mind right now.
