This doesn't qualify, but I'm reminded of the 2002 revisal of Rodgers & Hammerstein's ''Flower Drum Song.'' David Henry Hwang wrote a wholly new book and created a new plot; kept a number of the same names of characters, but repurposed and repositioned the old R&H songs (and added ''My Best Love'').
Hwang was Tony-nominated for his new book, but had they given the show a new name (like ''A Hundred Million Miracles''), would it count as a new musical? |
