Swept Away into the dark

There’s no question this show is beautifully designed and staged. The performances are top tier. John Gallagher, Jr is especially good but, really, the entire cast is excellent. The score is refreshingly different for a Broadway musical. It has the ring of authenticity. The Avett Brothers have done a fine job integrating their sound into this tragic story.

All that said, I can see why this show has not connected with audiences more broadly. It’s just so dark. It’s not a show I would revisit. I knew the jist of the story going in so the plot didn’t surprise me, but I didn’t anticipate how bleak it would be. Not that it needs a happy ending or more sentimentality - it doesn’t and shouldn’t. I mean, I also love a good tragedy, but this just hits different. I hesitate to say much more in an effort to avoid spoilers.

For me, the final moments of the show left me feeling like I’d just been pulled into the undertow of the cruel and formidable sea.
