I was at the same performance. I was not 'swept away'. There were two things that wee quite odd in Mr Gallaghers curtain speech. Firstly, numerous shows post closing notice and then rescind them. Almost every season. This is not at all unusual. And 2d - the example he used was that the last show to have done this was over 20 years ago.' He cited' 2003's URBAN COWBOY, which received universal pans, and was closing after 4 performance. The producer plowed money into for another 8 weeks, so Tony voters could see it - as if. During the extension attendance was less than 20%. Not a good comparison to make perhaps. Good shows and bad shows close quickly. Maybe reviews. Maybe word of mouth. But they close because they are not selling tickets. The Sunday night show was sold out because it was supposed to be the last performance. Looking on Telecharge site, for the 16 extension performances, so far they have sold 50% or less of available tickets. Before the closing announcement, they were filling 75-80% of seats, but at a low average ticket price. I think best case will be if the two extension weeks don't lose money. |
