| Interesting. I have perhaps more respect for Maia Freidman than you, but then I have likely seem more of her work in the UK. Ms Friedman makes no bones about the fact that the version of the show she directed at the Menier is the same version that Paul Kerryson directed at the Leicester Haymarket in 1992-1993, with Maria as Mary and Evan Pappas as Charlie. I agree this is not the best version. Pumping up Gussie and giving her a number that inexplicably opens Act, instead of 'Its A Hit', is a miscalculation of titanic proportions. I do believe that Mari'as vast experience as a musical theatre performer, and with this show, was a major part of how those performances got onto the stage in the recent revival. |
