Loved this movie, Shani Wallis is a long time friend and we keep in touch a lot. Her performance of As Long As He Needs Me is heartbreaking and the best ever. It was because the powers in charge of OLIVER had seen her performance singing from A TIME FOR SINGING on the Ed Sullivan Show that she got considered. I was backstage with her on the last weekend of SINGING when I asked her what she was now going to do and she told me she was up for a part in a movie but was not at liberty to say which. When she said that I looked at her and said, you would be fabulous in OLIVER, and she looked at me in shock,"You think so, as that is the movie, and that she was seen on Ed Sullivan and that is what they wanted. Incidentally, when FORTY SECOND STREET was done in London, she replaced Georgia Brown in it. She surely deserved an academy award, at least a nomination but 1968 was a strong year for actresses, Barbara Streisand (FUNNY GIRL), Faye Dunaway (BONNIE AND CLYDE), Ann Bancroft (THE GRADUATE), Katherine Hepburn (GUESS WHO'S COMING FOR DINNER) Audrey Hep Hepburn WAIT UNTIL DARK and DAME EDITH EVANS (The Whisperers).Streisand and Katherine Hepburn tied. OLIVER won for "Best Motion Picture" and won 6 others and it was nominated for a total of 11. I love the movie.
