| Because of the racial specificity of the show (coupled, I think, with the producers’ desire to keep costs down), the ensemble does not cover as many principal roles as we would expect, and there aren’t very many swings (who again, are limited in who they can cover, as June must be light skinned but Louise must be dark skinned, so you can’t have one cover for both). You can go online and find the Playbill to see how it’s laid out. The producers have covered it under the assumption that sickness would be isolated, not be company wide, and they put themselves in this pickle by not staffing adequately. Edited to add: we always talk about the actors, but there’s word out that what’s happening with the show is also affecting the musicians and the crew. It just sounds like possibly everyone is sick and there isn’t enough coverage. |
