I felt there was much more to it than that. It's a full story with beginning, journey, end and aftermath, which is more than some musicals and plays have. It's about four distinct characters and we learn a lot about them - "career" sailors and what kind of man might be one, naive, adventure-seeking, see-the-world youth, dedicated and self-less brother. Gallagher's character is complex and he learns from the others and grows, finding a family, finally, in tragic circumstances. I think the ending keeps people from recommending it. It's certainly a tonal shift.

I think the score really adds to the depth of the drama. I had problems with the book, but found the musical overall worthwhile and entertaining. It's not a story I've seen on stage before.
