Sergius, I always enjoy reading your reviews, and I generally like more experimental, less mainstream Broadway fare. But I saw Swept Away this afternoon, and I was very disappointed. I liked John Gallagher in the second, darker half of the show, but in the first half, I thought he overplayed the role; there were times when I felt he was channeling Popeye. The major problem with the second half, of course, is that there is, necessarily, no movement on stage — the four guys are stuck in a small lifeboat so there’s not much a director can do (though the lighting designer, shifting from night to daybreak, did a beautiful job). The score was pleasant enough (though I didn’t always feel it complemented the action), and it was certainly well sung, but I was never emotionally invested in the characters, especially the two brothers who, I thought, were stereotypes. I’m not sorry that I saw it, really, (thank you, TDF), but I expected more. | |
