In every aspect, beautifully judged. SWEPT AWAY tells a dark story but does it so well that it’s invigorating. There’s no hard sell here, just evident devotion to the material and splendid execution. The creative and performing talent is uniformly exceptional. From its stirring American roots music to its casual quotidian movement to its spare, elegant stagecraft and direction, SWEPT AWAY feels singular and entire. And the cast of men, led commandingly by Gallagher, Jr., plays it through with rousing fervor. SWEPT AWAY, like MAYBE HAPPY ENDING, is an admirably integrative and heartful work. And that’s encouraging. I hope it can find its sea legs on Broadway.
