Verdon's dance partner in the apache was Ralph Beaumont. Now that we know, thanks to Amiens, where Scott McIsaac likely got the info that it sounds like he passed along as fact, it seems quite possible that McIsaac might have wanted to be careful not to state it as fact. If he did state it as fact, and his source was that interview with Verdon, I would hesitate to describe him as a historian. I don't know if the standards for being considered a historian are as low in some areas as they seem to be when it comes to theatre and film, but, well, you know by now that this bothers me. I can't find much info about McIsaac. Did he also say that the Chevalier role was added for the film and the character wasn't in the show? As I mentioned to Amiens, the show opened at three hours and 15 minutes in Philly. Cutting needed to be done, and Verdon, however highly regarded she may have been by the creative team and however much she may have been stopping the show, was still likely to be considered after not only Lilo, but Peter Cookson and perhaps especially Hans Conried and Erik Rhodes. I am still a bit doubtful that her role was really cut down that much. Doing some searching last night, I found that Lilo admitted to Art Buchwald that she had been nervous that Verdon was stealing the show from her, but by the time of the interview, she felt that was no longer the case. Whether that was true or not (that she no longer felt that way), who knows? I hope one day to find a program from opening week in Philly to find out if Verdon ever did have seven numbers. Honestly, that would have been a tremendous amount for a supporting player. It's one reason why I am doubtful that she ever really did have that many numbers. |
