On the 2nd DVD in the documentary "A Leg Up: The Making of Can-Can" about 4 to 6 minutes into it, film historian Scott McIsaac said thar Verdon's numbers were cut at the insistence of Lilo, down from 7 to 4. He also said Lilo also had it arranged that the choreography of (some of?) Verdon's numbers would end with Verdon out of view of the audience; this would be, I would understand to be, to lessen the applause for her. There's also commentary about Lilo and Verdon there by Larry Billman, film dance historian, with him collaborating that Lilo was nervous about Verdon from the out of town tryout. Do you know who the main dance partner was of Verdon's in the Apache? Very handsome lean guy in sleeveless shirt in those short clips with Verdon in red doing a bit of the Apache dance. Apparently her trick knife broke that she was supposed to stab him with on opening night, so she improvised kissing him as if her life depended on it. Seeing those two and how they were costumed, it must have been so friggin' hot! |
