I'm only guessing from both the OCR (and the IBDB songs list tab for the show) and the movie (both when Shirley MacLaine and Juliet Prowse appear) what numbers Verdon might have actually done in the show. Act 1 1) Maidens Typical of France - in the film, Juliet Prowse did this along with the others, I believe, but without much (or perhaps any -- I forget) solo vocal or dance specialty - was Verdon part of it on stage? Or, had she an individual introduction/later entrance as a secondary couple subplot might do since Conried's character doesn't want her to dance? 2) Quadrille Dance - big dance number 3) If You Loved Me Truly - only song on recording where she sings; she has solo lines with Hans Conried and then the chorus joins (note: Verdon's use of head voice here in some passages -- she pulls it off, but it's a bit high for her but she does sound quite youthful; most likely the key was chosen to consider what best suit Conried and the ensemble's voices, too 4) Come Along with Me -- she doesn't sing it, but Eric Rhodes' and Hans Conried's characters are singing to her and she's reacting (maybe dancing?) and its probably part of comic dialogue scenes she shares with both men 5) Garden of Eden Ballet - big dance number Act 2 6) The Apaches - big dance number 7) Can-Can - big dance number 8) Finale - presumably lots of dancing, too Question: Who does Peter Cookson sing "It's All Right With Me" to? In the film, the role that was concocted for Frank Sinatra, he sings it to Claudine (Juliet Prowse). So I'm thinking maybe like what Alan conjectured -- perhaps Verdon had one or two other vocal duets and some scenes with Conried and/or Eric Rhodes that were either rehearsed and/or performed out of town and cut. So she actually was in a good amount of numbers (even if she didn't solo or appear yet in the "Maiden of France"). Scott McIsaac had "film historian" under his name when first introduced on that video. There were others interviewed at other portions of the documentary including the other guy I mentioned, plus Miles Krueger and some dancers who appeared in the film, among a few others. You might enjoy just seeing those tantalizing 1-2-minutes of Verdon in costume as Eve and in the Apache number and even more briefly in the Quadrille. |
