I saw the show that Wednesday afternoon and second all of Colbert's validating compliments. Scherzinger's gifts are both obvious - that instrument - and mysterious, what seems a unique EQ, her ability to use the raw pain expressed in a lyric/melodic line to empower rather than deflate her. Many have noted that this Norma is predatory. But I saw someone who's on that last noble leg of human resilience, a woman who has little left to give and thus the actor playing her uses it fully and leaves her entire investment in survival on the stage. It's a synergy of performer instinct and nuanced characterization. The two women blur, in the best sense.
