Yes, the note is held, but it's only slightly longer than the Buckley Norma held it, and I saw her do it (expertly) twice. The Swanson swoops and enunciated syllables, a pretentious affect in her iconic Norma, were translated in musical theater terms into into diva arias. To my thinking, the emotional release in the moment justifies the note. "As If..." is the emotional peak of the show, and it ascends until that epiphany-granting "home." I saw Streisand open her show at Madison Square Garden with the number, and she hit the "home" with similar intensity and also inspired applause. It's positioned to reflect ownership of revisited former glory or stomping ground, and it doesn't bother me the way it might others. But admittedly, these responses are subjective (see Jennifer Holiday's infamously adorned gasp - which I also saw stop her show). | |
