Her vocals in the show are consistent with prior Normas. The tempi for the three big solos, including “New Ways to Dream,” one of the prettiest melodies Lloyd Webber has given any character, are slower but she doesn’t exploit the pace; she’s not self indulgent in a role that arguably invites indulgence. The production is actually a disciplined rendering of the entire score. This isn’t a new approach to the songs, only how they function in the narrative. I think many look at the still shots - which conjure Carrie - and expect a pop rock refurbishment. Lloyd many re-invent the visual illustration of the story, but it’s a score forward staging. | |
