The 2004 Avett Brothers album MIGNONETTE was the starting point for SWEPT AWAY. It was based around an actual 1884 shipwreck and act of cannibalism. Of a yacht bought in England by an Australian. He hired four men to sail it to Australia - a journey the yacht was never designed for. It sank in the storm, and the crew of four all survived as far as getting onto a life boat. They had some provisions. They caught and ate a title which lasted several days. After 19 days they killed one of their number - the youngest - for sustenance. They were arrested when they landed at Falmouth. Cannibalism was called 'The Custom of the Sea'. The lawsuit over the events involving the crew of the Mignonette, when the survivors were convicted of muredr, forever ended the 'custom of the sea' as a legal recourse to starvation. That's an interesting story. A bunch of men dancing around isn't. The error was made on day one of this production's process, it seems, when the team creating the musical failed to trust the inspiration for the album that inspired the musical. |
