I have to concur: word of mouth was far less than positive, right out of the gate. The head scratching that met the preview period - and the negative response was quite dense in the discussions we all read - was an ominous sign. The production tried in the marketing, the graphics, the font, and most of the still shots suggested a quaint-ish seafaring tale that wasn't really accurate. Any log line that tries to hide cannibalism is working with deceit. Many tried to argue that the story's turn was its plot secret. But a show about that word is still about that word whether it's withheld or not. I'm not arguing against the artistic merit - I stand by the belief that anything can be musicalized, if a point of access is developed - but most people didn't want to see a show about alcoholics last season, even one with two beloved stars and respected composer. I'm not comparing Days of Wine and Roses and Swept Away, except to say both daringly focus on darker aspects of the human condition. And in historically unsettling 2024, too many decided darkness wasn't on the bingo card.
