It just depends on the underlying style guide. New York Playbills aren't based on Chicago. And even as print technology has advanced, the style guides can be stubborn. I learned MLA style in college, when it still prescribed underlining even though digital publishing was widespread enough then for italics to have been the norm.
The Times also spells theatre only -er (except, annoyingly, when -re is more convenient for the crossword), although some days that seems to me to be a sensible policy. |
