Rochester native here - I grew up going to Geva, and I never knew it came from "Gennessee Valley." I asked my mother, who was going to Geva/GeVa long before me, and she also had no idea. If the change happened ~30 years ago, we both would have been going there when it was still GeVa. And as I think about it I do remember that it used to be GeVa, but never thought to question the change.
I have a lot more to say on mistakes in bios (yes, actors make a ton), and style guides, and how I hate how Playbill puts titles of tv shows in quotes but movies and theater works in italics (I'm a Chicago guy - it's the titles of the EPISODES that should be in quotes, and the show itself should be italicized). And the New York Times is even worse, putting everything in quotes, as if italics hadn't been invented.
But thank you for that Geva/GeVa tidbit - I love learning something new! |
