that Motel sings about in "Miracle of Miracles". If you're a fan, whatever form or role she takes on as star character actress will be your favorite meal, as manna would taste like whatever your heart's delight in food might be. For the most part, she's been able to meet the vocal and acting demands of her previous shows very well. I happen to know a number of people who think she's overrated and over-awarded in the fact that someone like Marin Mazzie gave consistently excellent performances too without winning even one Tony. However, in the big belting numbers in "Gypsy", I and another opera singer friend of mine thought she's sounding on rather shaky vocal ground. I remember feeling this too when I saw in previews Julian Ovenden in "Death Takes A Holiday"; I recall thinking that he had a beautiful voice, but there was something off about his vocal technique, and sure enough, he was replaced not long after for the entire run.

McDonald has put some chest voice, yelling and desperation into "Rose's Turn" and is also taking longer rests than in the music; she's actually back phrasing, to basically negotiate the song, and also switching to head voice, especially for the ending, but sounding a bit grinding. My friend said she was doing the opposite of what famed soprano Leontyne Price said, that she was actually singing on the capital and not on the interest. It sounded like she was working very, very hard, but because the music isn't a natural fit for her voice, it's going to be interesting how soon her first cancellation will be of a role that gives natural belters a vocal workout. Hopefully she doesn't Julie Andrews-ize her voice.
