Best, I don’t know. Busy? Sure.
So far we’ve had one rapturously reviewed musical that seems to be finally building an audience, and an uneven but fairly well-reviewed movie adaptation that’s also doing well, along with two flops (one critically dismissed, one that got a lot of praise but is still closing after a month) and an indifferently-received jukebox bio-musical.

If my math is right there are now 9 new musicals (counting the Sondheim revue etc.) scheduled to open between January and April, and that’s definitely a lot- for a total of 14.
For comparison’s sake, last season saw 15 new musicals. And with most of them having closed by early January it’s safe to say that while it was an even busier season with some real gems, overall it won’t be considered a banner year.
How this year will be regarded depends on how critics and audiences respond to what opens in the next five months so it’s far too soon to say.
But exciting? Absolutely!
