Thanks for this. What I appreciated about Nicole's performance is exactly that arch goofiness, with which I felt she was channeling Gloria Swanson, certainly more than I expected. I argue that the screens helped with that aspect of the performance--what may have been kind of funny from a distance became grotesque and over the top when seen up close, adding a visual level of madness that is both funny and creepy. I am not a fan of the show (saw the original with Glenn Close and that was enough) so I liked this reinterpretation. In being less concerned with an opulent production, it let the story come through. However, I felt the Joe/Betty relationship suffered (Nancy Olsen being very likeable in the movie softened Holden's age) so I never felt there was an actual chance at redemption for Joe. I agree with you about the ending, it does feel to me that it's impact isn't anywhere near that of the movie's.
