One of the most remarkable aspects of McDonald's astounding performance is the balance she strikes between her desire to be a good mother (and wife), and her vaulting ambitions. She is not a one-dimensional psychopathic stage mother like some recent stage Roses - this woman cares deeply about her daughters and the prospect of a loving husband. But her ambitions get in the way. She desperately wants a family, and then does everything she can to destroy it. GYPSY has never felt more like one of the great American "family" plays. Laurents and Sondheim here are on par with Miller and Williams. GYPSY, in Wolfe and McDonald's hands, feels as substantive as ALL MY SONS and THE GLASS MENAGERIE. I have quibbles to be sure, but none that diminish the overall impact.
