| A great, total work of American art. Go to see McDonald tackle Rose, which she does magnificently, and be agog again over this singularly brilliant piece of theatre. GYPSY is, of course, as entire, as integrated a work of musical theatre composition as it gets. Here, Wolfe has basically, and wisely, opted not to get in its way and let McDonald alone, by and large, carry the patina of African American experience. Her presence and her matchless versatility—her Rose is unsurprisingly outstandingly acted—gives this GYPSY all the racial resonance it needs. It’s a masterful sleight of hand; Wolfe and McDonald bend GYPSY without substantially changing its shape. If you know GYPSY well, you will likely find some fault here. The show is over choreographed—period and character details are sacrificed to showmanship—and Louise’s transition is not altogether convincing, but it’s nonetheless gripping because the show and McDonald are exemplars of musical theatre craft. GYPSY is as illustrious and exquisite as ever. | |
