Lowbrow bloat. DEATH BECOMES HER was an unfunny movie and now it’s a tired and tiring musical. The leads work capably, but what they have to work with is unrelievedly scant. And entirely unsurprising. The score, a model of serviceability at best, just proceeds; it gets from one moment to the next without making any real impression. And the choreography is all Sashay, Shantay and little else. Which leaves the tawdry little book, a banal story about female vanity that foregrounds a curious preoccupation with mutilated women. A lot of “cat-fighting” hilarity ensues. In all, DEATH BECOMES HER is another entry in the theme park-ification of Broadway. Ride until you retch.
