I saw "Tammy Faye" a week into previews. No one should be shocked that the show is closing. It's a mess from start to finish primarily because the creative team was too lazy or too incompetent to come up with a coherent book that would make audiences care about the central character. It didn't help that Elton John;s score was merely serviceable except for one song, which I'm surprised has not been commented on more. That is the Act ! finale "Empty Hands".

When ithe song began I felt my spine tingling in a way I hadn't in the theater in a long long time. The song reminded me of how I felt when I first heard Jennifer Holliday sing "And I'm Telling You I'm Not Going" in "Dreamgirls." It was thrilling moment in "Tammy Faye,", but not nearly thrilling enough to make up for all the show's failings. I would be curious to hear if cast members are still dressing Brayden as she sings the song. I thought all of that was a major distraction from the power of the song itself and Brayben's delivery.

But I agree with another poster that even with its multitude of problems "Tammy Faye" was much more watchable than other current Broadway disasters such as "Swept Away" and "Death Becomes Her." "Death's" generally warm reception by the critics is particularly irksome because the show doesn't even deserve to be called a legitimate musical. It's an extended comedy skit with two stars that a bunch of critics happen to adore. But whatever the actors' abilities, the show itself is dreadful schlock.
