| With all the publicity the film is generating, and the great WaPo article interviewing some of the notable actresses who've played Elfie, I'm curious to know--if you've seen Wicked a bunch of times, who have been your favorites? (I'll focus on favorites below and mostly avoid talking about those I disliked.) FOR ELPHABA Idina was definitely not the best actress or singer to play the part, but there was something super exciting about her performance. Not just because it was the first. Because you were watching someone make a comeback after a real rollercoaster ride of having not lived up to her breakthrough performance. Ana Gasteyer drew on her history as an impressionist and found some delicious moments to sprinkle in Margaret Hamilton-isms that I really loved. She also probably gave the most vocally "healthy" rendition of the score, relying on a very strong and pingy mix more than others. Some of the vocally strongest: EARLY Eden Espinoza, who probably sang it the best; SJB, whose acting was boring but whose singing seemed effortless; and Jackie Burns. Rachel Tucker may have given the best all around performance, but was hamstrung by a tired supporting cast. FOR GLINDA It's a lot easier. No one has compared to Kristin. An excellent, but still distant second, would be Alli Mauzey. |
