Didn't like the original when I saw it with Kahn. LOVED the original when I saw it with Kaye--multiple times. That was back in the days when it was pretty easy to sneak in for the 2nd act, so I saw it many times. When the show was sold out, the standing room area was very very crowded for Act 2. Interesting that no house staff insisted on seeing tickets. The original's design was indeed amazing. The overture was thrilling. Kevin Kline was brilliant. Judy Kaye's voice was miraculous, with nary an imperfect millisecond. The Kristin Chenoweth was very very very good, although there was a sense of her holding back and resting between songs. I think she would have been amazing 10 or 15 years earlier. One version that hasn't been mentioned is the one-night benefit with Marin Mazzie and Douglas Sills. Mazzie was as incredible as you might imagine. Sills was quite good, and the performance was remarkably polished for a short-rehearsal-period one-nighter. Oh, what a loss is Marin Mazzie! All the shows she might have done! |
