I think Here Lies Love has a much better chance of getting a Best Musical nom than Wine & Roses, for several reasons. I think it nearly has a better shot than Water For Elephants too.
I think it will also get a Best Score nomination, and possibly Best Director, and possibly Best Featured Actor. Much less likely are Best Lead Actress or Featured (lea). But I would not count out the love for this piece, the respect for its off-broadway run, the attempted Broadway run, the score, the globally famous writers of the show, and the international story and diversity inherent in the story and cast (and specifically diversity (and international history/culture) that is Asian, a very underrepresented world in Broadway, relative to black characters, performers, and stories, for example). I think the math all adds up to a very good shot of Tony noms, despite having closed and not having been a hit on Bway. |
