The most memorable such incident for me was at a preview of the original production of "Sweeney Todd" at the (then) Uris. I believe it was a Sunday matinee and during Act II the main bridge that was suspended across the breadth of stage slowly began to descend for no apparent reason. There was enough time for the actors to get out of the way and as far as I know no one was hurt. The show stopped for several minutes while the crew tried to fix the problem, but when the performance resumed, the bridge remained firmly on the stage floor. And the first words we heard after the pause were Angela Lansbury singing, "Nothin's gonna harm you....!"

I also recall attending a preview matinee of the original "42nd Street." Midway through, the performance was halted and everyone was asked to leave the theatre for what turned out to be about 45 minutes, allegedly because of a bomb threat. But because this was a David Merrick production, skeptics couldn't help but wonder whether this might have been a publicity stunt.
