I've never seen ''Don't Bother Me, I Can't Cope,'' but I love Grant's ''If I Could've Been'' from ''Working'' (1978), based on Studs Terkel's book. I find that song especially beautiful and touching as it expresses the yearnings of just regular folks and their unfulfilled dreams. ''Working'' ran only 12 previews and 24 performances, but got 6 Tony nominations, including Score (with Stephen Schwartz, James Taylor, Grant, etc.). This short-lived show even became an ''American Playhouse'' episode (1982) on PBS, starring Lynne Thigpen, Rita Moreno, Patti LaBelle, etc. |
