Yes, "it" does... what a wild thing for a casual comment on a theater chat board. I think more important than me not splitting streams would be for PlayWiz to have identified which of the things in my post they were commenting on, since you both understand that there were two subjects of Rob Marshall's would-be directing work being mused on. But Marshall's terrible work on NINE didn't stop Disney from hiring him to direct the film of the beloved fairytale musical INTO THE WOODS... and clearly from Chicago anyone taking a chance on him can see that his strength is in a musical that is build around performance as a metaphor and way in, and fantasy and dancing... Into the Woods is basically a comedy-drama with no performance and no dancing, a very odd choice for him after he flopped with Nine. Kiss of the Spider Woman, at any point in his career post-Chicago, whether it be after success or after failure, is an obviously good fit. I'm not saying he couldn't screw it up nonetheless, he surely could, but I think even after the creative and box-office and awards failure of NINE, KOTSW is still a way way better fit to have him make than Into the Woods. And I think at any point before 2023, making it with Jennifer Lopez starring in that sensational lead role (that largely shows off her strengths and masks her weaknesses), would have been an even better bet than it is in 2024/25. In fact, the perfect time for it would probably have either been in the mid/late 2000s when JLo was a much more bankable movie star and still had something of a music career at least fresh in our memories, or right after 2019's Hustlers where she had a huge career resurgence and was pushed for an Oscar nom which she didn't get (and I wouldn't have nominated her either for that) but she did win many awards and got SAG and Golden Globe noms for it). Unfortunately she took herself down a bit in the years since then by doing stuff like releasing that embarrassingly bad bio-pic-music-video-feature "This Is Me Now..." and lower grade movies like Atlas and Unstoppable, as well as suffering the indignity of announcing and booking a greatest-hits tour and having to cancel it for lack of interest. Had she just turned her Hustlers acclaim and popularity into KOTS happening, it would have probably been a bigger deal for her and the movie to have her. However, had that happened it might have been suffocated by the covid of it all (like In the Heights). |
