That's their dream, but the reality is more likely to be an assault on government funding for everything from the arts to air traffic control. Based on what the courts decide and how long Trump stays the figurehead of the party (because it's unclear if anyone else can unite that base), we might see a complete gutting of the government, to be replaced by sub-standard, tech bro privatization (presuming that Elon and Zuck can be bothered to staff a nationwide air traffic system that somehow is a profitable venture), or at least steps taken in that direction.

But there's a far cry from cutting off funding streams to actually censoring the art as a whole, and the degradation of the government under neoliberal policies has been happening for so long that we've been building alternatives for decades. So they can't actually stop us from making our art, but we have to figure out how to pay for it and ensure we all get a living wage in the process, which the current non-profit theater system is roundly failing to do for pretty much everyone who's not in the Executive Suite.

So we have a lot of work ahead of us, and there will likely be some big shake-ups in our industry, but we're already living in a broken system of arts and arts funding, and if there's a silver lining in the next four (or more?) years, it's that things will finally be broken to such a degree that they have to be rebuilt in new ways, rather than patched up to slow their death cycle.

Which is all to say - we're the NEA now. It's our pocketbooks that will keep our art afloat.
