I saw ''Vanya'' as an ensemble piece. I assume Pierce and Weaver got above-the-title billing because they WERE the biggest names in the cast: he, as a multi-Emmy-winning TV star; she, as a multi-Oscar-nominated movie star. Their names were the draws. Also, putting them above the title maximized the cast's chances at Tony nominations. Sometimes, it can be hard to get two performers from the same show nominated in the same category; also, you want to avoid the same performers in the same show going head-to-head, in case they split votes. ... In this case, Pierce got nominated for Leading, and Billy Magnussen for Featured. If the Tonys left Nielsen in Featured, it's possible that she might've bumped Grant out (or both of them might've been nominated). But when Nielsen was put into Leading, maybe that helped bump Weaver out of her nomination. Who knows? Nielsen deserved a good shot at winning the Featured Tony. But nobody was gonna deny Cicely Tyson, 88, of winning her Best Actress Tony that season. |
