| You are asking a very interesting question. If they had done what you suggest, the On A Clear Day revival would have been a much different show. However, here's what the director Michael Mayer told Broadway World at the time the project was being workshopped in July, 2010: "By playing a little bit with gender, I thought I could make a different kind of love triangle at the center of it. That's the goal. What I really wanted to do is keep as much of the spirit of the original show intact, and use as many of the songs that I loved so much, in there." Brian d'Arcy James, Anika Noni Rose, and David Turner played Dr. Mark Bruckner, Melinda Wells, and David Gamble respectively in this tryout, which had a new book by Peter Parnell. The revival began previews on Broadway 11/12/2011 and officially opened on 12/11/2011, but now with Harry Connick Jr. and Jessie Mueller as Mark and Melinda. David Turner returned as David Gamble. I caught the show on 1/22/2012. I had purchased a cheap balcony seat, but was re-seated on the main floor. Jessie and David were both very good. Harry performed Mark's songs beautifully, but seemed very uncomfortable in the romantic scenes with David. In the lovemaking scene, they began to get together, held each other, but then the stage went dark, implying that they had sex. The show didn't really work, but I don't regret seeing it because it is rarely staged. Connick, Mueller, and Turner all did the stage door. Connick signed, thanked everyone for coming to the show, but didn't chat much with the crowd. Mueller and Turner signed and engaged with everyone quite extensively. Anyway, that's what I recall about what I experienced 13 years ago. |
