| Hooray! I love being right. Correct me if I'm wrong, but a writer who does a translation of a play in another language, like the upcoming Ghosts, or the recent Uncle Vanya, etc, they are never even eligible for a writing award (unless there is an award for translation, which I think there ought to be), right? Even though in a sense SO much of the dialogue is actually their work, whether it is the work of finding a good way to use English to express the same thing that writer understands the original writer to have been saying in their language, and matching everything the line/exchange/scene/play achieve in the original language... or taking it and loosely adapting it with more emphasis on what you as a writer want to do even if it doesn't match the exact tone or intention or the way wording and grammar etc are used by the original writer, which I think several playwrights have been criticized or praised for doing in their adaptations of other playwrights work. But in translating, the translating playwright becomes a co-writer in a sense. But they aren't and would not be eligible for a writing award would they? |
