| Bowen Yang, who played Phannee in ''Wicked,'' and Rachel Sennott, who played PJ in 2023's ''Bottoms,'' will announce the Oscar nominations. I'm a big fan of Yang's work on ''Saturday Night Live,'' but I'm not a big fan of having a performer from an awards-eligible movie announce those nominations. Will Yang be tempted to wisecrack every time ''Wicked'' gets a nomination? (And ''Wicked'' is expected to reap many nominations.) Granted, Yang himself isn't expected to be nominated, but it can be awkward. I was at the announcement of the 1995 Tony nominations at Sardi's. The Tonys asked Kathleen Turner, who was starring in that season's ''Indiscretions,'' to announce them. And indeed, ''Indiscretions'' got 9 Tony nominations, but everyone else in her 5-member cast (Roger Rees, Eileen Atkins, Jude Law and Cynthia Nixon) was Tony-nominated, except her. I felt so bad for Turner. |
