I once interviewed Ben Fankhauser, and he, too, was baffled that the Tonys made him eligible for Lead; he didn't ask to be bumped up from Featured. I also asked a Disney higherup, who implied that ''Newsies'' did not make that request. It's a shame because it robbed Fankhauser of his shot at a slot. From that same 2012 Tonys, I'm reminded and puzzled to see that Jessie Mueller (from ''On a Clear Day'') was Tony-nominated for Featured Actress. Granted, it was her Broadway debut, but she was playing Melinda, the female lead originated by Barbara Harris, who was nominated for Best Actress. ''I would add having the three actors rotating as Billy Elliott become co-nominees, with a specific ruling that you didn't have to see all three to vote for them (but you still had to see all the other nominees from other shows in order to vote...that was real consistent).'' I will always consider that one of the worst Tony rulings ever. There were so many inconsistencies. So each of the 3 child actors only did 2 or 3 performances as Billy a week, and competed against adult actors who did 8 shows a week. Tony voters didn't need to see all three Billys, which presumes they all gave equally Tony-worthy performances. (I saw all 3; they didn't.) Again, this goes against the Tony rules that say that only those who perform on the show's opening night are Tony-eligible. Also, David Bologna and Frank Dolce shared the role of Michael, Billy's friend, but only Bologna got to be Tony-nominated as Featured Actor, ostensibly because he did the opening. But all three Billys, who all didn't do the opening, got to share a Tony nomination? That's so wrong! (In my alternate universe, Brian d'Arcy James would've opened in ''Next to Normal'' (not ''Shrek'') and won his Tony, but that's another story ...) |
