My point is that in the case of Oliver and in the case of Wall st and DWP, the star billing goes to the villain. I agree with you that Andy does not tug at our heartstrings. But the problem for me (and for you too) is what could be achieved by musicalizing that movie. Nothing is the answer. I don't think it is impossible to write a musical in which the antagonist is the leading role. In all productions of Oliver, Fagin is the first billed followed by Sykes and Nancy. In revivals of Annie (such as now at MSG) star billing goes to Miss Hannigan. What is Billy in Carousel? Complicated. Basically we agree Devil will not wear Prada on Broadway or if so very briefly. |
