I posted this on my Instagram account with photos:

I attended the final performance of Swept Away on Broadway tonight. It was my third visit and absolutely thrilling. The cast was electric and everyone’s singing was transcendent. The audience was over the moon with their applause. A case was made for future productions.

Stark Sands spoke for cast at the end and pointed out that the show had sold out the past three weeks. He thanked the regional theaters—Berkeley Rep and the Arena Stage where the show developed. He also thanked all the fans who traveled from all over the country to see the show and hear the Avett Brothers music, whom he also praised. He said this wasn’t the end—the show will live on in the Broadway cast recording and in future productions. This particular one should not have closed tonight.

Director Michael Mayer came out to praise the cast and crew and he quoted Sondheim’s lyrics from the song With So Little to Be Sure Of from Anyone Can Whistle:

“It was marvelous to know you
But it isn’t really through.
Crazy business this, this life we live in—
Can’t complain about the time we’re given—
With so little to be sure of in this world,
We had a moment!
A marvelous moment!”

Thank you to all the amazing actors, the Avett Brothers who wrote the haunting songs, book writer John Logan, the inventive director Michael Mayer, the stellar band of musicians and the tip-top production team for such a memorable final performance.
