To celebrate the release of ''A Complete Unknown,'' the new Bob Dylan biopic in which he co-stars, Norbert Leo Butz is sharing videos he's made of classic Dylan tunes. Timothee Chalamet is astonishing as the legendary singer-songwriter, and Butz portrays Alan Lomax, the musicologist and champion of folk music. Butz doesn't sing in the film, but his Dylan covers (videos below) include ''Don't Think Twice, It's All Right.'' ''A Complete Unknown'' features Chalamet singing live as Dylan, and the soundtrack includes ''Blowin' in the Wind'' and ''Mr. Tambourine Man,'' plus two tunes that later became the titles of Broadway shows: ''The Times They Are A-Changin''' and ''Girl From the North Country.'' Also, Monica Barbaro plays Joan Baez and Edward Norton is Pete Seeger. The range Chalamet displays is just remarkable. I can't think of another gifted actor of his generation who could've pulled off Elio Perlman in ''Call Me by Your Name,'' Paul Atreides in ''Dune,'' Willy Wonka in ''Wonka'' and now Dylan in ''A Complete Unknown,'' which seems sure to snag him another Oscar nomination. At 20, Chalamet appeared in John Patrick Shanley's ''A Prodigal Son'' at MTC and won the Lucille Lortel Award for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Play. I hope Chalamet returns to the stage and makes his Broadway debut someday, preferably in a new musical. And he just turned 29 yesterday. Happy birthday! |
