I agree -- Mrs. Mullen's return is very important to the story, especially Julie respecting her and allowing her time with Billy. That was a bold action for a musical at that time to allow a wife to permit a mistress a final farewell. I think that sequence shows more about Julie than Mrs. Mullen and is essential to her character's strength through the years.
