| I feel like Staunton is generally the best at whatever she does; having seen her in "Circle Mirror Transformation," "Gypsy," and "Follies," I'm always left blown away by the honesty, intensity, and clarity of her performances. She is a consummate story teller who loses herself in these roles, and generally lifts the entire production around her. Her "Gypsy," marvelously directed by Jonathan Kent, was the first time I saw the show where all of the pieces fit together, and I understood the story and the drama in a way I never had before. I've always been a bit lukewarm on the musical, appreciating its ambition while souring on some of its saccharin material in Act 1, but that production was the one that showed me why those too-sweet moments were needed to earn the journey. Imelda also did something the night I saw it, which she didn't do in the filmed performance, where she turned the ending not into the reconciliation that it's generally played as, but instead into another opportunity for Rose to demean Louise and emerge the victor. It was stunning to go through the whole play and actually have her still be the same person at the end of it, unable to fully let go of the anger and rage and need to be Number One. My jaw hit the floor at that, and it will always be one of my top theatergoing experiences. |
