But I think it also works beyond that to comment on these people and their lives and spirit. A theater gypsy is a *show person*, going from job to job, show to show, city to city, to make some kind of living in show business. Louise was forced to be this by her mom (and because of her sister, who was much more inclined to it, though she may not have always wanted it), and she ended up owning and utilizing it, taking it on as her show business persona and actual name. But Rose is the real Gypsy, she just never had the chance or the circumstances. Rose is living in the shadow of her daughters (doing what she should have been doing herself), and her daughters are living in the show of their mom (driving them to do what she wants to do).
So I think Gypsy as a title applies to both Rose and Louise and ends up meaning a couple of things.
