As someone who saw Starlight Express in Las Vegas at the ripe old age of 10, I’m a bit biased. The Vegas production was a watered-down production that was probably just a bit showier than the first national tour. Because it’s such an expensive show to produce, I didn’t have a chance to see it again for another 20 years. I finally caught up with the German production, and I was in awe. There had been a lot of updates to the story and score, but the fun was all there. They rotate new casts into the show every year or so, and it seems to be in fresh shape even though it’s been rolling along for 36 years. The auditorium has a few loops in and around the audience, and the most expensive tickets give you access to a 360 degree swivel chair. They maintained the rotating bridge that is heaved up and down throughout the show. No, the story is not revolutionary, and the score is full of cheesy pop tunes. But I had a freaking blast. I even shed a tear when I felt the nostalgia rush over me in the theatre. Fun little tidbit of mine is that I saw the exact same actor play Electra in Vegas and in Bochum. I guess once you’re part of the family, you’re always a part of the family. The newest version has a Momma instead of Poppa, and the two actresses alternating in the role are the 1992 London Pearl Reva Rice (who also played the role previously on Broadway and later in Vegas) and the original German cast Pearl, Maria Jane Hyde. In conclusion, if you get the chance, go see it! We rarely get spectacle like this nowadays. |
