I gave it another go today and found it worse than remembered. The scenes have no pacing, no comic tension - the Vera hiring Mame sequence, deadly - Ball chain smoking for some reason. Paul Zindel’s screenplay flattens or excises jokes, adds unneeded expository info, and neglects the protagonist at every turn. But the biggest culprit is Saks, unable to find a way into the musicalization. The numbers are either set pieces (the formal gravitas of the unending title song) or so indifferently set forth, they feel like rehearsal footage. And the supporting cast save the recreating originals is uniformly lackluster (the decision to age much of the ensemble to match the star suggests a lack of confidence in Ball’s integration into the Dennis world building). Ultimately, the problems are bigger than the infamous Ball vocals, her need to age 15 years in the story notwithstanding. |
