Wayman, thank you for posting that video! It was a wonderful evening. I saw the production several times during its original run, and it has a special place in my heart, so I was very happy to be there for the reunion concert. I was surprised how much of the performance was staged, with no scripts in sight for the most part. Danny Burstein was the only person noticeably carrying a script, but he has a good excuse since he's kind of busy at the moment! :) The reunion concert was much more like a full performance than a concert reading -- closer to current Encores than old Encores, so to speak. I can not believe they only had four days of rehearsal. I was in the very last row of the orchestra and could not see the details of faces, and, except for the kids, it seemed like no time had gone by and it was like the show had closed its run just yesterday. I agree with the previous posts that, in some ways, it seemed even better than it had been before. Matthew Morrison, although he seemed under the weather, was much more impassioned than originally (I blame his original interpretation on Bartlett Sher, because Andrew Samonsky, who replaced Morrison, also played the character very woodenly), and I think Kelli O'Hara and Loretta Ables Sayre found some new shadings to their characters. And you could sense how much the cast just liked each other. Of the 39 original cast members, 36 of them were there. |
