Right. I guess what I'm trying to say is that Follies has a much more specific arc that follows the two couples (and of course the non-couple of Sally and Ben), which is much more satisfying a narrative to me than all the random-seeming threads of the guests in The Wild Party. Yes, Queenie/Burrs/Black is supposed to be the central plot, but to me they get lost a little in the midst of the other guests, all who seem to get a lot of time but don't ever develop much. I'm not really sure what is important and what's background - it all seems equally important and, to be honest, equally unimportant. In Follies, it's much clearer what the focus is supposed to be, and what the others add to the proceedings without dominating it. Although there's one definite similarity when comparing the LaChiusa WP to the original Follies in Concert - whether it's "hot chitzadee" or Buddy trying to play all 3 roles in Buddy's Blues, it's good ol' reliable Patinkin at his most annoying lol. :-) |
